Link of the week : barcodepedia.com

www.barcodepedia.com is what I believe a very interesting project. It is an free to use database with the barcodes of all kind of products like books, compact discs, electronics, food, …  It is based on a community and everyone is free to add new products. For the moment there is no API to interface the database that is behind this website but there seems plans to make one available soon. I can think of a lot of cool applications that can use this database :  Like a scanner based shopping list on your mobile phone. You just scan all your empty packages before you trow them away, and the app looks up the product and makes a shopping list on your phone  that you can use while shopping. There are already popular apps for the G1 android like shopsavy and iXmat scanner but none of the programs can make shopping lists for you.  Or a tool to index your book, movie or music collection. There exists already a linux gnome application for this called alexandria but it only works for books as far as I know.

Please feel free to add your ideas to the comment section and let me know if you plan to make a shopping list application. Id’love to have one !

We have a website that uses Barcodepedia, its called http://www.list2lend.com

you can upload your media library, so movies books video games etc, you can add friends, check out what they have, request stuff from them, and it will keep track of everything.

We use barcodepedia for the Movies and Games information, so whoever uses it doesn’t have to fill out the information. We do it for you with barcodepedia.
